4.0 Other Web Languages

Well Done!

Learning HTML and CSS is quite an achievement and anyone who does this to a reasonable level of skill should feel proud of this acomplishment. Elegant web pages can be built using these and for many people this is all that will ever be required. However, there are several other web languages available to the web developer that open up countless possibilities for rather more complex web design. Without these, many of the successful sites such as Ebay, Facebook or Google simply could not function. It is simply up to the individual web designer and his or her aims as to whether they need to invest the time in learning these other languages.

These other web languages are beyond the scope of this tutorial but over the next few pages we will try to present a rough outline of the more useful ones, and in the order in which they should be learned too:

  • Javascript
  • XML
  • ASP
  • PHP
  • SQL

Note that it is generally not necessary to learn ASP and PHP; one or the other would suffice as they pretty much do the same thing.
